A chat with TU's Bookstore Manager Jim Hanley:   03 / 18 / 2013

For almost a decade, Jim has been the general manager for Temple’s Barnes and Noble university bookstore. Just so you know, this bookstore is one of the most successful stores that sells Alta Gracia apparel.

We had the great opportunity to chat with Jim and get to know a little bit more about what he thinks about the brand, and his secret for Alta Gracia’s success at Temple.

What comes to mind when you think about Alta Gracia?

I think it’s a great message. It’s providing better conditions for workers and I really like the whole philosophy behind it. It’s such a great effort. In our store, it has become a great selling feature. One of the things that resonate with students is the quality of the items vs. the cost. It’s a good equation. It’s really good quality merchandise for the price.

Tell us about the success of Alta Gracia at Temple University.

Well, when the brand first launched we were the #1 Barnes and Noble location in sales. I can’t help but think sales are even higher now because of the rolled tee program.

What’s your secret behind Alta Gracia’s success at Temple?

Visibility. Having it visible. Using the signage to really highlight the product. We really try to departmentalize the store as much as possible so we can have Alta Gracia front and center as a brand.

What would you tell students about Alta Gracia?

I’d tell them their purchase does make a difference. Whether they are choosing to purchase a basic sweatshirt or t-shirt, the quality, the style, and the price and as an added benefit, the mission and what they are helping to do goes a long way.
