There's a new brand of USC apparel in the Russell House bookstore sporting the name Alta Gracia - Spanish for "High Grace."

Florida State University recently joined other colleges and universities in a movement to help factory workers earn 3.4 times more than the legal minimum wage by selling Alta Garcia apparel at the FSU bookstore. Alta Garcia is the first apparel brand in the world that pays its workers based on the cost of living in their respective countries.

Husky Bookstore carries “fair wage” clothing products

Paving a pathway out of poverty and inspiring hope for the future are the goals of Alta Gracia, a recently opened factory in the Dominican Republic that promotes a living wage for its workers. A “living wage” enables them to provide adequate food, clean water, clothing, shelter, health care, child care and an education for themselves and their families. The factory produces T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies that can now be found in the Husky Bookstore on campus.

The next time you are about to buy a T-shirt, you may want to stop and consider the clothing label it was made by.Alta Gracia, an American-owned college logo clothing company, is making it simple for students to support fair wages.  College students nationwide don't even have to leave campus to buy apparel that supports factory workers earning a "living wage."

SLAPhas been in talks with the U-Book Store regarding Alta Gracia for the past few years as the clothing line was being established, and the line will be in stores later this month.
