Alta Gracia Fan Spotlight!

10.18.2011

Guest blog post from University of Washington student and a proud Common Threads team member! A spotlight on one of our Alta Gracia supporters.

Hello hello!  My name is Alix Goldstein, and I am a junior at the University of Washington.  I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada and escaped two years ago to the diverse, beautiful, and thriving city of Seattle!  I am majoring Geography and Community, Environment, Planning with a minor in Global Health.  I heard about Alta Gracia last winter, and when I was presented with the opportunity to intern this fall I accepted right away!  I am involved in United Students Against Sweatshops and have been working on the Sodexo campaign since last spring.

When I was a sophomore in high school, I was asked to write a research paper on any subject I thought was interesting.  Surprisingly enough, I chose to focus on the worker abuses of one of the largest corporations in the world, Wal-Mart.  After completing my paper (and earning an A!), I become absorbed with the idea of corporate responsibility.  All my peers knew me as the “Wal-Mart Hater” weird social activist girl.  But I guess I could have been called worse things!

Upon coming to UW, it took me two years to find USAS.  I am sad I’ve only got two years left, but I’m going to try and make it the best two years possible.  Alta Gracia fit perfectly into my interests, and I am excited to give this internship I’ll I’ve got.

Other interesting things about myself: I am vegan, and live in a vegan/vegetarian house with eight other people.  I ride my bike everywhere, and have ridden 120 miles to Port Townsend, 50 miles around Lake Washington, and have competed in various informal bike races around Seattle.  I am heavily addicted to caffeine, and I love collecting stickers!
